The Historic and Ecological Living Medieval Society.
Also known as HELMS.

Courtesy, Honor, Integrity, Respect and Purpose.

HELMS Founding Principles.

That the society be based on principles of Courtesy, Honor, Integrity, Respect and Purpose.

That our bylaws and efforts reflect and support our founding principles.

That we seek to actively enourage interest in and appreciation of the historic heritage of the middle ages and the ethical, social and environmental benefits of that time period and way of life.

To provide educational assistance, direction and materials to persons and organizations with an interest in the topics and ideals we believe in and aspire to.

That those who do the work that makes a society great be given the rewards, respect, and recognition they deserve.

That social and organization recognition and honors be based on factors which better reflect the true values of nobility and chivalry and the characteristics and skills which made a noble worthy of their position. In practical terms this means that our system is not based on combat or mock combat but on the practice and study of real skills and pursuits which would have been involved in the management of a kingdom or other holding.

That the concepts of Organization Rank and Social Rank not interfere or infringe on upon the appropriate access and involvement by any person, nor that any other form of discouragement or discrimination be applied without reasonable cause such as safety or ethics issues.

That our society be built upon and continue to pursue the best possible rules and principles appropriate to a non-profit educational organization and which encourage the personal growth and dignity of each and every member of our society.

That issues, concerns and problems should be discussed openly and in a forthright and courteous fashion as befitting a society of honest, ethical and rational people with shared cause and values.

That concern for the needs and well-being of each and every member of our society be the duty of every member of the society regardless of rank or position.

That we seek to work cooperatively with other civic and hobbiest organizations whose goals are compatible with ours.

That we seek to promote our goals by works and deeds and positive examples rather than just words.

That we honor and promote appreciation and understanding of heroic legends, myths and tales of fantasy for their positive social impact throughout history and in inspiring many to become more involved in the interests and goals our society promotes.

That we seek to promote and pursue environmentally positive practices in our society, at our events, and in our surrounding community.

That authenticity of our portrayal and presentation is a very desirable goal, but that it also must be kept in perspective. There are ethical and practical considerations which must limit just how authentic and accurate our efforts are. For example, we will NOT be recreating (or tolerating) many of the common behaviors of the time such as animal abuse, bigotry, religious intolerance and abuse of authority or position, to name just a few.

That we shall drink no wine before it's time.

Due to the fact that we work with children, schools, and grant money, we reserve the right to deny participation in H.E.L.M.S. society or event functions, or portions thereof, to any person that the executives or event staff of HELMS feel may be questionable in a given situation. As an Honor oriented organization we reserve the right to deny participation to any person judged to be questionable with regard to issues of personal integrity.

The relationship between H.E.L.M.S. and BHFI/The Realms of Legend.

Some might ask what the relationship is between these two entities, especially considering the overlap in interests and people. Simply stated, HELMS is the educational and hobby side of what BHFI is seeking to do professionally. Many ideas and interesting things that could not be done under the heading of a for-profit corporation can be done, or be done better, by a non-profit educational and recreational society.

For example feasts and other events hosted by BHFI would always be seen to have a specific agenda attached to them no matter how pure the intent initially. So such events are better hosted by a distinctly separate organization that is legally isolated from BHFI. There are of course also liability exposure benefits to this approach as well.

HELMS does endorse The Realms of Legend now that it has been merged with the BHFI concept and we believe that such a facility will embody many of the goals and aspirations which HELMS stands for.

We also hope, in the long term, to eventually hold many events at TROL as an ideal facility for what we expect to need and that has a very favorable inclination toward reenactment oriented groups

Further, we hope to eventually lease land there for our headquarters building, when the time comes that there is a need and it is affordable to do so. It makes sense that the HQ of a medieval, historic and environmental educational society be placed in a medieval historic setting at a very ecopositive facility and it will be a lot cheaper to build at TROL than it would be to recreate the setting and infrastructure systems ourselves. We also like that TROL is designed to offer this benefit to other medieval education and hobby societies and persons interested in the time period and lifestyle.

We also believe that the formal and informal educational and experiential learning opportunities at The Realms of Legend will be numerous, comprehensive and well executed and that it will be an excellent environment for working on projects and efforts which are appropriate to both organizations.

The formation of HELMS.

"Any idea, no matter how noble it's inception, can and should be improved upon." -- Sir Lancelot.

For some time many smaller societies have been branching off from larger medieval societies looking to improve on their methods, with varying degrees of success. HELMS was initially formed in January of 2003 as a result of a number of conversations with such reenactors and other persons interested in historic recreation and reenactment.

One recurring theme in these conversations was the need for a long term meaningful and educational focus other than just the perpetuation and expansion of the society as well as a set of rules which actively encouraged positive, honorable and chivalrous behaviors while discouraging or eliminating many of the root causes of negative behaviors plaguing the existing medieval societies. It was also desirable to have a system of social rank which progressed using factors relating to the actual functions of medieval nobility rather than a purely combat based system.

Our founding members, James Anderson (AKA High King Magnus of Arnor), and Elizabeth Johnson (AKA Lady Elizabeth) had found while working on things for BHFI that those who worked on that project no longer had an avenue for hobby pursuits in the shared interest. It was also found that participation in other medieval societies was hampered by the affiliation with the BHFI project which dominated all interactions with those in other societies, whether or not the members of those others societies were for or against the project.

At approximately the same time it was found that the Celtic Medieval Festival needed to become a non-profit operation to allow for cleaner legalities in relation to the educational focus of the festival and related taxation issues. In the course of exploring the non-profit status issues it was discovered that it would be just as easy to incorporate a new medieval society as it would be to do just the faire, and thus the operation of the Celtic Medieval Festival was transferred to HELMS as a useful venue for promoting historic, ethical and environmental awareness.

We would like to thank BHFI, developers of The Realms of Legend historic and environmentally oriented theme park concept which we all love so much. We thank them both as supporting sponsors, and for the donation of space for, and assistance with, this web page.
